In response to the global trend in higher education, internationalization now plays a central role in the activities of universities worldwide. Cross-border flows of ideas, students, faculty and external financing coupled with developments in the information and communications technology are changing the environment for higher education. This implies both increased collaboration and competitiveness between countries and institutions on a global scale.
The Makerere University International Office was set up as a sub unit in the Office of the Vice Chancellor with the aim of promoting and strengthening internationalization efforts in the university. This is done through receiving international visitors, admission of foreign students, exchange of staff and students with universities abroad, supporting joint development of programmes, advertising of scholarships, study abroad opportunities and summer programmes , organizing international conferences on campus and engaging in collaborative researches, public lectures by renowned scholars, among other activities.
Being a premier institution in the region and in Africa and due to the quality and uniqueness of our programmes, many international students all over the world choose Makerere University for their studies and also for the Study Abroad semester.
Currently, we have 715 international students both undergraduates and postgraduates in various disciplines from the USA, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Zambia, Japan, South Africa, South Sudan, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Korea. International students are admitted either for full time programmes or as occasional students registered in another university but study at Makerere for one or two semesters taking selected courses or doing field work for some months. By studying at Makerere, they interact with our students and enrich our academic programmes. Strategies are in place for recruiting more and more international students.
Makerere University has forged partnerships and collaborations in education, research, science and technology with renowned institutions around the world to enhance its standing as a world class institution. According to the Webometrics ranking of (date, paper), Makerere University ranks forth on the African continent and has continued to attract more students and scholars. Makerere University subscribes to regional and international associations such as the Inter University Council of East Africa (IUCEA), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), International Association of Universities (IAU), Regional Universities Forum (RUFORUM), Universities Science Humanities Engineering Partnerships in Africa (USHEPiA), UNESCO, African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI), SIU-Norway among others. Makerere also works with development partners such as USAID, JICA, SIDA, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Partnerships in Higher Education in Africa (PHEA), International Development Research Centre (IDRC) among others through awarding grants and scholarships for further studies.
