Undergraduate Admissions


Before reading on, please make sure you have read the general information about international students seeking to join Makerere here.

Makerere University welcomes foreign candidates who satisfy the minimum entry requirements which are:-


(i) At least an O'Level Certificate or an equivalent qualification (secured at the same sitting).

(ii) At least two Principal Passes at 'A' Level or an equivalent qualification (secured at the same sitting).

iii) For Diploma holder applicants, the applicant should possess at least a Credit or Second Class or equivalent Diploma in a relevant field from a recognized Institution plus an equivalent of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least 5 passes plus an equivalent of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with at least one Principal Pass and Two Subsidiary Passes obtained at the same sitting.


Diploma/Degree holder’s applicants MUST attach certified photocopies of their academic transcripts issued by the awarding institutions.

Applicants from countries where the language of instruction is not English are required to bring evidence of proficiency of English. However, Makerere University (School of Languages) conducts proficiency tests on request.

Please note that to be eligible for admission, the last examination must have been sat during the year in which admission is being sought or not more than two years previously.
At its discretion and on the advice of the Faculty concerned, the University may consider for admission to a degree course a candidate with only 'O' level qualifications provided that he/she has been registered at another University (prior to applying), for a degree programme and has successfully completed at least one year of University education. He/She must however submit the University transcript(s).

Please note that the requirements described above are only minimum academic requirements for admission into the University. There is no guarantee that fulfillment of them will automatically make one entitled to admission into the University. The possession of the minimum entry qualifications only makes one eligible for consideration for admission.


Application Procedure

a) Direct Entry From High School

International Applicants with Ugandan Certificates of Education will apply as private students while applicants with Secondary School and High School certificates from other countries must present certified copies of their academic qualifications. The Awards must be from recognized institutions in their countries. Applicants must filll the Attached Application Form (A).

Application fee for international students is USD$75 or equivalent and Shs 50,000 for applicants from the East African Community.

This can be paid using ether Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) or Telegraphic Transfer (TT) to the University Account ( bank details attached). The bank payment slip is then attached to the application documents and sent to the address of the Registrar given. Each applicant should also attach a copy of the Birth Certificate to the application form. Deadline for receiving undergraduate applications is 30th April every year.

International Applicants wishing to study Law at Makerere University must sit the pre-entry examinations test sat on a given date. The Applicant must go to Senate Building, Room 505 and pick an application form after paying Shs 80,000/= at any of the banks on campus. He/She attached the bankslip to the Application form and submits the completed Form to Room 505.


b) Diploma Holders Scheme

The applicant should possess AT LEAST a Credit or Second Class or equivalent Diploma in a relevant field from a recognised Institution plus Secondary School Certificate with at least 5 Passes (or its equivalent) and a High School Certificate with at least One Principal Pass and Two Subsidiary Passes obtained at the same sitting (or its equivalent) .

The Applicant fills the attached form.

c) Mature Age Entry Scheme

To be eligible for the Mature Age entry examinations, the candidate must be at least 25 years old during the year of application. International Applicants wishing to sit mature age entry examinations must present themselves in person on the date given.

Application forms for those intending to sit the examinations are issued at the University, Room 505, Senate building on payment of non-refundable application fees of shs.150,000/= using Makerere University bank paying-in slips.

Mature Age Examinations are sat in December of the preceding year. The closing date for submitting the completed application forms will be announced on our News Portal.

Candidates eligible for consideration will be sent an application form, schedule of fees and the financial guarantee form. The completed forms together with other relevant academic documents and the necessary application fee should be received by the Admissions Office not later than 31st March of the Year in which admission is sought.

N.B. Applications cannot be processed until the University has received the application fee and undertaking by the sponsor to finance the student's studies at this University.
